Giving What the Defense Reads you Part 1

What if I told you that whenever you play the game of basketball on offense, there is someone near your right shoulder telling your defender exactly what move will make. Whether it is a call for a flash screen, a jab step, shot fake, or hard drive, your opponent knows it. What if I told you that same someone tells your defender your move before you even think about the move?

Clearly, this "someone" is costing your team a lot on the offensive end. Don't you just want to stop this thing from talking to your opponent? Actually, there is a better solution. What if you could train this someone to lie?

First of all, this someone is you. It is your head. It is your right foot. It is your left pinky. It is the grimace in your mouth. It is you. In order to have better control over the game of basketball, you need to turn this apparent disadvantage into your most powerful asset.

The body of a novice basketball player is like a social security number posted on the side of a 177-foot tall building.  Everyone driving around can see it, and if they are of the notorious type they can use it to find out everything about you.

So, if you were unaware of the connection between your mind and body, you would be telling your defender exactly how to defend yourself. Your opponent would be able to know if you wanted to move left or right, or pass or shoot. This is why the best basketball players learn to control the perception of their body.

One of an advanced basketball player's most unheralded abilities is to use their body to perform "inception". If a basketball player can seed ideas into a defender, the player could disguise or hint of one move as another.

A very well know example of basketball inception is the pump fake. When done effectively, this move sends your opponent in the air, defenseless. You can now easily get a few freethrows or penetrate the lane. While perfecting this move to make it seem natural is indeed an effect tool, it is jejune compared to the more powerful techniques available. It is a 2 dimensional move.

Throughout this week at Offthebackboardblog, we are going to delve into the most mind blowing and potent processes of basketball inception. We are going to investigate the 3D plane and even some of the 4th dimensional mind games out there. Don’t miss out!
